As calls to combat disinformation intensify on the sidelines of COP 29, the Forum on Information and Democracy has joined the advisory committee of the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change, launched by Brazil, the UN and UNESCO during the G20 summit.
The Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change, spearheaded by Brazil, was officially announced on Tuesday, November 19, during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Its goal is to mobilize all stakeholders to effectively fight climate-related disinformation and promote access to reliable information on these critical issues.
“We are delighted to support and join this initiative, which follows close cooperation between the Forum and the Brazilian G20 presidency over the past year. Together with all our partners around the world, we will ensure that the work undertaken within this framework aligns with the principles of the Partnership on Information and Democracy.”
— Camille Grenier, Executive Director of the FID
Launched in collaboration with other countries such as Chile, France, Sweden and the United Kingdom the initiative is also supported by international organizations like the UN and UNESCO. The Forum on Information and Democracy, which has worked throughout the year with the Brazilian G20 presidency on these issues, will now sit on the initiative’s advisory committee.
Ensuring the integrity of information on climate change is a key democratic challenge. The Forum will bring its expertise in developing international and national projects to ensure all aspects are addressed, from media freedom and sustainability to proposing regulatory frameworks for tech companies that structure the information space.
The Forum calls on all civil society organizations and research institutions to rally around this landmark international initiative, particularly in preparation for COP 30, which will take place in Brazil in 2025.
